Chavez: Venezuela leaves Inter-American #HumanRights Commission

Hugo Chavez, the controversial president of Venezuela, decided that his country will leave the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights. The reason for the decision would be linked to a report drafted by NGOs operating in Venezuela, where are reported behavior and government decisions that seriously affect democracy and human rights. Chavez brings up once again the United States, guilty of being behind this relationship and, therefore, it would be a document does not correspond to reality. The Commission, apparently, would have supported the coup attempt against Chavez in 2002: a good reason, according to the chairman, to discredit the accusations against his government.

It is difficult, however, ignore the iron fist to the press critical of the Venezuelan executive, or even the threat of a popular uprising (which spontaneously, as is clear, would have very little) if in the coming elections the Chavez's party, the PSUV, doesn't have at a minimum of 75% of the seats. If all these we add the violence, both physical and verbal, to some journalists and pro-government voters, the situation becomes more complicated: I do not think Chavez tell just lies and I am not surprised that there was a design coup that sought to stop his rise to leadership of the South American country. But I believe that his conduct was contrary to many of the values that are advertised with some ease, especially those who make socialism a flag of justice and equality, as well as the spirit of his main action. As they say, between saying and doing there is a great sea in the middle, and once again real socialism is light years away from the high ideals in many respects shareable, than the theoretical.

Wanting to scream

gato

Life never returns to normal, it does not go back to that time before the tragedy that now – illusorily – we evoke as a period of calm. I open my datebook, try to resume my life, the blog, the Twitter messages… but nothing comes out. These last days have been too intense. The face of Reina Tamayo, in the shadows in front of the morgue where she prepared and dressed her son for his longest journey, is the only thing in my mind. Then the images of Wednesday piled on: arrests, beatings, violence, a jail cell with the stink of urine that adjoined another where Eugenio Leal and Ricardo Santiago demanded their rights.  The rest of the time I continue on like a mannequin, looking without seeing, furiously typing.

And so, there is no one who writes a coherent and restrained line. I so want to scream, but February 24 left me hoarse.

Owners of anti-Chavez TV to launch new channel #FreeVzla

CARACAS, Venezuela — A television company that was booted off Venezuela's airwaves and even cable announced plans Monday to resume broadcasting, saying it will meet government regulations while keeping a tough editorial line on President Hugo Chavez.

Company president Marcel Granier told a news conference that Radio Caracas Television Internacional will try to make a comeback on cable after agreeing to meet government rules on carrying official broadcasts.

He also said his operating company, Empresas 1BC, hopes to launch a sister channel, RCTV Mundo, aimed at international audiences.

RCTV broadcast some of the country's most critical comment on Chavez's government before officials revoked its on-air license in 2007, alleging it had supported a short-lived 2002 coup against the president.

It switched to cable, but the state-run telecommunications agency last month ordered cable companies to drop RCTV Internacional, saying it had defied the new rules requiring local cable channels to carry mandatory government programming, including some of Chavez's speeches.

Press freedom organizations condemned RCTV's removal from the airwaves and cable, saying it was part of a broader effort to silence government critics.

Granier said RCTV would maintain its tough editorial line if allowed to resume broadcasts, but conceded he was not sure the channel would be allowed to return.

"We're ready for any type of injustice," he said.

Granier insists that RCTV's removal from cable was illegal. He said that Empresas 1BC requested permission from Venezuela's telecommunications agency to return to cable "under protest."

Diosdado Cabello, director of the agency, indicated the station would not be blocked if it obeys the law and praised Granier's announcement it would meet regulations: "This merits an applause. They are recognizing the law."

Under rules approved in December, two dozen local cable channels, including RCTV, must carry government programming when officials deem it necessary, just as channels on the open airwaves already do. Chavez regularly uses that legal power to order broadcast TV and radio stations to carry his marathon speeches, which can last up to seven hours.

Venezuela: Chavez radicalization: a break or break? #FreeVzla

The radicalization of Chavez: a break or break?

It must be difficult to be Chavez today.  11 years of promises, of people buying, of exhausting B.S. and still you do not have the country on your side and your poll numbers are below 50% because some malcontents grumble about the lack of water, lack of light, lack of security, lack of food items at the store, high prices, lack of personal security....  From the comforts of Miraflores Palace where Chavez has grown fat and lazy and egomaniac, it is difficult to understand the growing restlessness, the unwillingness of too many to give him that blank check he so wishes for, to bring us to a Cuba like "mar de la felicidad", sea of happiness.  And yet, the dense fog of hubris does not stop reality to seep inside the mind of Chavez, and he sees that he cannot rely on anyone as even some of his alleged close followers are rumored to be reluctant to become mere Cuban colonial employees and prefer to resign.

Thus Chavez has launched himself into the only thing he knows how to do: divide the country, scare people, blackmail them, impose his word if not his will.  In short he is running again, in the campaign of his life because he knows that his entourage is only able to hire buses to ferry red shirts, if that much.  And because if he loses this one he will be out, from the hand of his own people.

Two recent events illustrate quite well this anxious Chavez.  A Friday before last he convoked a march of students to try to counter the very successful real student protest against his repression and terrible management of the country.  I was at my Chiropodist the following Saturday, dealing with an ingrown toe nail and reading Panorama waiting for my turn.  The shop owners are clever, they buy Panorama and El Universal for the customers waiting room.  Panorama, once the respected newspaper of Maracaibo, one of the only three papers able to give a run for their money to the Caracas ones, has become so pro-Chavez that it is embarrassing.  Witness this picture illustrating a quarter of the front page, of a Chavez brandishing with a black glove the Bolivar sword calling "his" students to arms.

The caption says it all, only the students attending "bolivarian universities" are the true students. dismissing the "manitas blancas", little white hands, as fascists and what not.  Hence the threatening, simplistic black glove?

Except that his student rally saw too many buses as usual (opposition student marches never need buses to fill their ranks), and as Globovision lovingly retransmitted, most of these chavista students looked suspiciously like public employees requested to march.  But that is really not the offensive part, not even the silly vest calling for the fashion police: the problem here is a clear image of Chavez calling for violence, as if the opposition could overthrown him just as he controls EVERYTHING in the country, including, he never tires of reminding us, the gun power.  Is he really trying to let us know that his patience has run out and unless we submit to his will it is going to be "off with their heads!"?  More >>

BREAKING: Chavez Seeking Nuclear Solution?

Mushroom-cloud

Newsflash from the Venezuelan grapevine that Chavez, incapable of solving the catastrophic energy and water shortage crises of the country, is planning to create a new Ministry of Nuclear Energy in defiance of international agreements.

This latest revelation comes in the wake of ruthless expropriation of major commercial organizations such as food supplier Polar; and with unprecedented levels of change in appointments to the political administration.

Knowing the close bond between Chavez and fellow dictator Ahmadinejad of Iran, it would be no surprise to hear he has designs on nuclear energy.

Western observers, especially in the US, are increasingly alarmed by the prospect of Iran and Venezuela teaming up as a global source of terror.
